one two, one two. is this thing on?

You know, I drink a lot of that Rockstar Recovery (I've not made a secret of my obsession with it). One would think that I'd have developed a tolerance for it. I think the opposite has occurred. I'm ultra senstive to whatever magical ingredients are mixed within. It makes my heart race (and in a few cases, hesitate/stop). I'm down to one can a day (from two) and that morning yellow canned goodness is not making me feel so swell.

I'm opening up (probably) my last can of this electrolyte/caffeine phenomenon this morning. I'm working from home for a big chunk of the day. The remainder of my Rockstar Recovery cache will remain in my downstairs fridge as booze mixer and in my bedroom fridge as, well, I don't know. A morning after consolation prize? Heh, I'll tape cab fare to the cans as a way to expedite their removal from my house.

So I sit here with a few different poeple's workstations at my remote disposal. It's so empowering until I have to call someone who I've insisted stay off their computer while I'm controlling it from my home office and have them "hit the enter key, please" or "could you hit the power button on your computer?"

I'm in complete and total control![asterisk].

Just got off of the phone possibly considering an international vacation. This would be a first for me, since the only foreign country I've been to is Miami. Sure, I've been to Canada and was probably the youngest white kid stopped at the Tijuana border with a variety of switchblades (hidden in plain site... genius). I have to get my ducks in a row if I want to make this happen.

Speaking of Ducks (zing)... What a freaking heartbreak. I mean, that game tying pass was such a kickass moment and to lose it after all that. Well, welcome to Oregon sports. Oregon: Holding on to 1978 since 1991.

I think I'm putting weight back on. How the fuck does one abstain from drinking and gain weight? Determination, that's how. Fat kid sticktoitiveness: Overcoming calorie deficient adversity to keep the weight on. When it comes to Weight Watchers points, I always get the high score.

My thermostat thinks I'm at work, so it's set for just above freezing. My genitalia looks like a blue robin's egg in a nest.

Have to hit the showers. Long day ahead. Gooch:Out

Damn I'm such a G, it's pathetic.

Citizens:

Whenever there's a police shooting I often get annoyed by the police entity's handling of the press. In  withholding information, anyone with an iota of critical thinking can go from being sympathetic to those who are sworn to protect us to being skeptical of what really happened during the discharge of a cop's firearm.

The tragic shooting of Ralph Painter, Rainier, Oregon's police chief involved a 21 year old man. Police told the press that the shooter appeared to be high on meth but will not state anything about where the shooter obtained the gun. Presumably, and from witness reports, the shooter grabbed the gun from the police chief before shooting him. When asked about this, police would not confirm the accuracy of this theory.

Why not?

Although it appears a clear case of an asshole shooting a good cop, I'd feel better if the information released wasn't so one sided. Citizens don't have press offices with which to spin their side of the story. They don't have the option to wait days before explaining discharging a firearm. Whats to keep the police from speculating that any citizen involved in anything was on drugs? Or worse, what's to keep them from telling the press that a citizen "may have been high on drugs." As I type this, I "may" be drunk and high on cocaine, weed, and some crazy shit that I invented in my basement. I'm not (primarily, because I don't have a basement). But in a police culture of shoot-then-ask-questions, there's also a culture of "talk shit about a citizen and then retract later."

Over New Years Eve, a shooting occurred a club. Police responded and one cop fired his gun. At whom? Why? No reason given. It just happened. From the Oregonian:

"He didn't shoot the victim, in the course of what he came upon and what he saw going on, he discharged his weapon," Sheffer said. "There was no one person attached to the incident."

Sheffer could not go into any additional detail about the officer's involvement in the incident and would not confirm later why the officer fired his gun or whom he was targeting citing the ongoing investigation.

"We can't clarify anymore (other than) this is an officer involved shooting but this is not an officer involved shooting in which someone was struck," she said.
Four days after the incident, the officer had yet to be interviewed regarding the shooting. All the police will do is take the sentence "an officer shot his gun" and stretch it into a just-as-vague paragraph.

I don't envy the dangerous nature of police work and have a lot of respect for the job they do. I just think that the press handling of officer involved events undermine their efforts by bringing a level of skepticism among the literate public. In 2010 when an officer shot a deranged homeless guy holding a weapon, Portland's then police chief Rosie Sizer was so evasive in her description of the homeless guy's weapon that I had to google the "clues" she would slowly release to determine that the officer involved shot a deranged man holding an exacto/pen/hobby knife. Her reluctance to state what the deceased suspect was holding made me think that they didn't fully believe it was a justified kill.

Clearly I'm not in a mood to spellcheck or capitalize. Makes me not want to post it. Hey, wait... Maybe I didn't write this at all. In fact, all I'll say is that paragraphs were written. I can't clarify any more that this was a Gallucci involved writing and not one in which anything was said. I blame my netbook.

From the Book of Face... at the 11:11

This exchange occurred on Facebook. A guy that I've known for a while that gives himself nicknames and has delusions of grandeur at times wrote this and I responded. He cited a story and commented that he'd been talking about this phenomenon happening for years and no one believed him. Well, read the rest. He's a friend, but I could make an entire website out of shit that he says like this.

[quoted news story:] Shift of Earth's Magnetic North Shifting

Dino Mangino I said this was happening... I said two years ago that I thought the magnetic pole was shifting, I said it last year a few times... people didn't believe me... and looks like I was right.

John Gallucci I'm sure the world's scientists will watch your Facebook updates more closely now.

Dino Mangino
They should as it seem I am more intelligent than a lot of them. Its not the first time I've been right on what scientists eventually come out with.

Juanita Burney Perhaps scientists have been screaming this type of info for years and just now the media is finally reporting it.

John Gallucci
No, I'm sure that Kyle was the lone voice of this geological phenomenon and the scientific community was obviously too quick to dismiss him.

Dino Mangino
I am the lone voice- out of the people I know.
If I'd had stayed on my original educational objectives, I'd have been one of those "crazy" scientists who you find out 20 years after their deaths, that they were 100% correct on things.
I have... been studying science since going to OMSI once a weekend from the age of 5 on ... and always spend at least an hour a day reading up on current science issue

John Gallucci
So you were right about the poles shifting based on current science issues of which you read an hour a day. The material, presumably, is written by scientists. So are scientists not listening to you or just to the other scientists that wrote what you read? And unless the people you know are runway painters (or compass makers, I guess) they probably didn't not believe you, they just didn't care. It's like "I totally said that Apple was coming out with an kickass mp3 player and no one believed me. Because they hadn't read that issue of MacWorld yet."

John Gallucci I like that you aspired to be a scientist that no one believed until you'd been dead for two decades. I mean, to claim that you'd be twenty years ahead of all worldwide scientific academia if you'd stayed in science class is remarkable. I must have gone to different OMSI tours than you did. Happy New Year, btw.

State of the Gooch, 2011.

2011. A Gooch Oddity.

You know those obnoxious letters people send at the end of the year that talks about how fucking awesome their lives are? Do people send those anymore? I think those letters have been replaced by people's Facebook updates involving the phrase "I love my life." Facebook has given people an excuse to do that shit everyday. The purpose of this post, however, is not to bitch about Facebook. Although I'm sure I will later in this post.

My portable technology base has changed recently. I have a Kindle now and I've learned to read. At least, learned to read books for the sake of enjoyment rather than just information. I love the Kindle and I'm now purchasing books, reading books, pirating (of course) books, and even reading instead of watching television as I go to sleep. My vocabulary might improve. I might be able to rely on conversation instead of drunken stunts when I meet people at parties. Stay tuned.

On the phone front, I've switched from my venerable WebOS powered Palm Pre to the Android based HTC Evo. Other than the oft bitched about battery life, it's a great phone. Big screen... it's like a small tablet... but it fits easily in my oversized jeans pocket. But is this a phone on which you can watch pornography? You bet.

Not drinking is almost more of an effort than drinking. Who knew that free drinks could be had by simply turning down a beverage. As if finances were the factor in my drinking soda water. With lime. Don't forget the fucking lime. I don't like to dwell on it because acting like its remarkeable is pretty much an indictment on my character. And I've done a good job so far of avoiding indictments. Let's just say it's worth trying to do once in your life: See if you can go an extended period of time without drinking. I know people that do a span of a month (one guy does three months) or more at a time every year.

My New Years resolutions began a while ago. I mean, we should all resolve to better ourselves and not require a chronological jumping point on which to do so. I gave up $140 of expanded cable in an effort that has been deemed "cord cutting" by the tech press. I don't rely on cable for a majority of my television viewing. Rather, I use services like Hulu and Netflix to watch television and what I can't get through the super basic cable (on which I do receive high definition programming) I, well, pirate the shit out of it.

I've come to terms with the fact that I own a cat (and have, actually for two years). Her cat structure is back down in my living room. I moved it into my office because having a cat structure in the living room seems like a cat person thing to do. I'm not a cat person. However, we seem to adore each other. Well, I adore her and she's kissing my ass in exchange for treats. It's the best (and most typical) relationship I've ever had.

I've entered a moratorium on dating. I mean, if you date someone you meet through friends, the imminent demise of the relationship (hey, I'm an optimist. Question mark.) will always result in imminent awkwardness and possible villification of you. Or them. But in my case, likely me.

Internet dating would be a way to go. But as an avenue in which I can meet someone that isn't related or best friends with someone I know, it's a fucking failure. That shit could work in New York, or Los Angeles. Portland, Oregon is too small a town. Both people I dated through Match dot com ended up being somehow very connected to people I knew.

Then there's eHarmony, where you fill out an epic series of multiple choice questions as exhausting as the SATs so that you can not only be rejected, but rejected based on 29 dimensions of judgment and lack of self actualization. Their slogan is "Love begins here." I need a site where "Like begins" and take it from there.

Sobriety has made casual flings a thing of the past. I lack the necessary charisma to soberly engage someone to the point where they would want to have casual semi-anonymous sex with me. And being sober and banging a really drunk chick seems wrong. Because in some places (read: anywhere that isn't a college campus) it is.

So, as I close in on month six of sobriety and its close relative, abstinence, I find myself understanding why the Taliban and/or Al Queada are so angry. I've spent my adult years fueled entirely on caffeine, Jack Daniels, vodka, and blow jobs. Without these things I most certainly would have looked at flight schools and tall buildings in a different way that the rest of the world. Muslim extremists have anti-drug messages like "Blowing shit up: My Antidrug." They also have bumper stickers that read: "I don't dial 911, I dial IED" but that has nothing to do with anything other than my crowbarring a mediocre joke in where I felt it was most (in)appropriate.

Facebook and social networking are a big deal. I won't go into my usual rant of how the clouds of reality television and the low pressure front of easy self publishing have collided to create a perfect storm of self adoration and promotion (and now, in my case, a shitty weather-based analogy). Douchebaggery is afoot and will increase in exponential factors until everyone feels they should be the subject of a reality show and I fulfill my dream of taking sleeping pills before I jump off of a 10 story building into a carbon monoxide filled garage. Oh, and there's a noose and I shoot myself at some point mid air. I just don't want the papers to question my resolve to kill myself and they'd better not dare imply that I was merely seeking attention.

That said, I enjoy writing funny things in 140 characters or less. It's like a word game exercise for copy editors. Taking something and truncating the shit out of it so that it can be tweeted is fun for me. I also write haikus and get the same kick out of doing so. True story.

In closing, I feel that the lack of dating and drinking and even using mass transit (which I didn't mention because it's not a big part of my life) has reduced my stress level a bit. It's okay to live stress free (or as close as you can to it) but there really is no payback. No risk, no reward... that kind of thing. I'll get back into it all. I guess I'm on a vacation from myself. Or I'm suicidal, which would be the ultimate vacation from myself. The state of the Gooch is "chill." I'm at a great starting point for the new year. I just hope I don't fuck it up. That's the best any of us can hope for anything: Don't fuck it up. Words to live by.

(Not proofread, not spellchecked).

and at the 1/1/11...

I've already (all but) given up drinking. I've taken up reading and given up cable. I take mass transit on occasion. I eat healthier (up until the last few days as I indulge before the New Year. I guess I did my resolutions early. I gave up being interesting for 2011.

Be good. Be safe. Don't drink and drive.

Goochout.

It's kind of God's fault for making 12 year old boys so damned attractive.

Tweet that didn't make it...

Remember when an XBox was a girl you used to casually date and an XBox 360 was a girl you used to casually date but kept coming back?

Would have posted it, was afraid of the random nature of my Facebook friends. UPDATE: posted on twitter, deleted simulcast from Facebook. Shoots and scores.

goochout.
